Í þessari ritgerð verður gerð grein fyrir sögulegu samhengi þjóðdansa, gildi þeirra og hlutverki á Íslandi í dag. Hugtök tengd fyrirbærinu verða rædd og farið yfir helstu heimildir sem til eru um þjóðdansa á Íslandi. Fjallað verður svo um helstu fræðimenn sem skrifað hafa um viðfangsefnið, skrif þeirra og mismunandi nálganir. Að lokum verður rætt um hlutverk og gildi þjóðdansa í augum þátttakenda á Íslandi í dag, byggt á viðtölum sem tekin voru við sex iðkendur þjóðdansa, viðtöl þeirra verða svo greind á grundvelli sjö meginþema sem upp komu. Í lok ritgerðar verða svo ofangreind viðfangsefni borin saman. Fjallað verður um stöðu íslenskra þjóðdansa í dag og nauðsyn þess að rannsaka viðfangsefnið betur. This essay deals with the historical background of Icelandic folk dance, and its role and value in modern Icelandic society. Various key concepts related to Icelandic folk dance are discussed, and a review given of the main historical sources dealing with dance in Iceland. This is followed by an overview of the research that has previously been carried out into this subject, noting the key figures and key works and the various approaches that have been taken. The final part of the essay which deals directly with the role and value of folk dance in Iceland today is based on six interviews taken with people who practise folk dance. The results of these interviews are discussed on the basis of seven main themes that came up. In the conclusion of the essay, these interviews are compared and a brief discussion given of the present position of Icelandic folk dance, and the need for further research to be undertaken.
