Weight bias among children : pilot-study among 5-year-old preschoolers in Iceland

Weight bias among children has never been examined in Iceland before. The aim of this study is to explore whether weight bias exists among Icelandic children like various studies in other countries have demonstrated. In this pilot study a total of 25 five-year-old children completed measures of weight bias. Through three different tasks participants were asked to assign positive or negative adjectives, choose playmates and best friend, and choose mean and nice characters from three different figures showing a very thin, an average and an overweight body size. The results strongly indicate that weight bias is present in Icelandic preschoolers and that there tends to be more conclusive discrimination among girls then among boys in all three tasks of this study. These results are in line with results from similar studies in other countries and emphasizes the great importance of addressing the issue of weight bias among children of all ages. Markmið þessarar forrannsóknar var að kanna hvort börn á Íslandi hafi hlutdræg viðhorf til ólíks holdafars, líkt og erlendar rannsóknir hafa sýnt fram á. Könnuð voru viðhorf 5 ára leikskólabarna (N=25) með þremur aðferðum. Þátttakendur voru beðnir um að tengja jákvæð og neikvæð lýsingarorð, velja sér leikfélaga og besta vin og í lokin þurftu þeir að velja góða og slæma hegðun allt út frá þremur myndum sem sýndu börn í ólíku holdafari. Niðurstöðurnar benda til þess að hlutdræg viðhorf séu til staðar á meðal leikskólabarna á Íslandi og ennfremur að þau séu sterkari á meðal stúlkna en drengja. Þessar niðurstöður eru í samræmi við niðurstöður úr sambærilegum erlendum rannsóknum og undirstrika mikilvægi þess að rannsaka enn frekar fordóma gagnvart holdafari á meðal barna á öllum aldri.
