Studies have shown the negative effects of childhood sexual abuse, like the development of eating disorder symptoms and distorted body image in adulthood. Using data from the Icelandic Centre for Social Research and Analysis “Youth in Iceland 2004”from a random sample of 2.074 participants this relationship was explored further. The aim of the current study was to examine the mediation effect of distorted body image between sexual abuse experience and the development of eating disorder symptoms for both males and females. The results showed that body image could mediate the relationship between sexual abuse experience and the development of eating disorder symptoms, in females but not in males. Keywords: Body image, sexual abuse, eating disorder Fyrri rannsóknir hafa sýnt að kynferðislegt ofbeldi er frekar algengur glæpur í nútíma samfélagi sem getur leitt að langtíma- og skammtímaáhrifum á karla og konur hvað varðar heilsu og virkni.
