Analysing abalone

From the left: Walter Joseph, Murphy Stanley and Walter Harris examining abalone shells. Abalone is an important material in Northwest Coast art. It is used as a decorative inlay, as jewellery, and it is sewn onto robes and ceremonial regalia. It is often used to denote power, rank, and prestige.
