In 1906, Edward S. Curtis received funding from J.P. Morgan to begin work on "The North American Indian," a twenty volume set of photographs and text documenting Native American tribes throughout the western United States. The eighteenth volume, featuring the Chipewyan, Cree and Sarsi tribes, was published in 1928. "Since the beginning of the historical period the Blackfeet have ranged the prairies along Bow river, while their allies, the Bloods and Piegan, were respectively on Belly and Old Man rivers. In the earliest times of which their traditionalists have knowledge the three tribes were respectively the Saskatchewan, Red Deer, and Bow rivers." Each volume of the North American Indian includes a set of portfolio photographs and a volume of text detailing tribal history and culture. At this time, the library has digitized the portfolio photographs from all 20 volumes.
