Frederick G. Schwatka was born in Baltimore, Indiana on March 27, 1810. He was married at Wheeling West Virginia to Amelia Hukill on October 24, 1833. They moved over the next several years to Cincinnatti, Ohio, Peoria, Illinois, Galena, Illinois, and finally to Oregon where he took up land at the mouth of the Columbia River. When the government took his land in 1853 to be used for Fort Stevens, he moved to Albany, Oregon and worked as a cooper. In 1859 he moved to Salem where he lived until his death on January 12, 1888. Frederick and Amelia had six daughters and two sons one of whom A.C. was connected with the San Francisco Examiner and the other Lieutenant Fred Schwatka served with the U.S. 3rd Cavalry and won fame as an Arctic explorer and made his home at Rock Island, Illinois.
