Description
Summary:This picture is of a photograph of the stern-wheeler "Northwestern" at Albers Dock under the bridge in Portland. It was built at Portland in 1912 and operated as the "Grahamona" until 1920 when it was renamed; after 20 more years it was transferred to Alaska where it operated on the Kuskokwim River. Under its original name it operated on the Willamette, and later on the Columbia and Snake rivers in conjunction with lines of freight trucks radiating from the landings. Later it was renamed and refitted as a floating crew barracks and work boat for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company which was stringing new cables through the Columbia Gorge. Later it operated again as a freight boat on the Willamette. The original photo is from the collection of Captain Eckhart.
