"The southern king crab (Lithodes santolla), (Molina 1782), is one of the most important decapod crustacean found in Antarctic waters, where has the highest commercial importance along these coasts. The fishery of this specie in Chile is centered in the region of Magellan and Chilean Antarctic Region, where extraction began in 1928 and now according to statistics compiled by the Institute of Fisheries Development, there is overexploitation of the resource, but nevertheless has not been addressed under a comprehensive view of self-sustainability and information various genetic processes of this organism is limited; for this reason the regional Chilean government has pushed conducting research aimed at generating knowledge about the biological-fishing and genetic status and is encouraging initiatives cultivation in the region of Magellan and Chilean Antarctic Region." "La centolla (Lithodes santolla) constituye uno de los grupos de mayor relevancia entre los crustáceos decápodos que habitan en aguas australes, en donde presenta un alto valor comercial. La pesquería de esta especie en Chile, está centrada en la Región de Magallanes y Antártica Chilena, donde se inició su extracción en 1928 y en la actualidad de acuerdo a las estadísticas registradas por el Instituto de Fomento Pesquera, existe una sobreexplotación del recurso, pero a pesar de ello no ha sido atendida bajo una mirada integral de auto sustentabilidad y la información sobre los diversos procesos genéticos de este organismo es limitada; por tal motivo el gobierno chileno regional ha impulsado la realización de investigaciones dirigidas hacia la generación de conocimiento sobre el estado biológico-pesquero y genético y está fomentando las iniciativas de cultivo en la Región de Magallanes y Antártica Chilena."
