It is argued that the existing models for the regional simulation of permafrost distribution need considerable refinement in areas with only shallow debris covers (which amount to a considerable part of the alpine landscape). Moreover, the importance of snow cover and ground thermal characteristics for regional permafrost modelling is stressed. Besides the established field methods, ground temperature monitoring by means of small dataloggers have proved very useful. A distinct dependence of BTS on snow depth evolution during the preceding months is shown. Based on extensive field work, a map showing the permafrost distribution of the Schilthorn massif is presented. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
