Summary: | Cloud-forming aerosol over the Southern Ocean currently contribute a major source of uncertainty in global atmospheric models. This work presents the seasonal changes in marine aerosol over the Southern Ocean, between the summer and winter months. The observations, obtained during two ship-based voyages south of Australia and New Zealand, revealed the impact of meteorology and marine biological productivity on the concentration and cloud-relevant properties of the marine aerosols. Comparison was made against an array of published empirical models for sea spray production to investigate their relevance for this region. |
