"News & Issues" piece on members of the revived advisory committee to the state's endangered and threatened species program, who want the panel to act as an advocate for wildlife, rather than serving as a sounding board for the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF & W). The prospect of becoming an independent voice was raised by committee member Sally Stockwell, conservation director for Maine Audubon Society, just a few days before the release of an IF & W-sanctioned survey that, in the department's view, concludes that a majority of Maine residents don't want to see the reintroduction of wolves. IF&W went on record in 1998 opposing wolf restoration, and is also against the federal listing of the Canada lynx as threatened, and the Atlantic salmon as endangered.
