The Rangeley deal was initiated in 1989, and since then the methods used then have become more commonplace throughout Maine. Local land trusts have proliferated, and work with state and federal agencies, the Nature Conservancy, the Maine Coast Heritage Trust and other groups to protect the land. Over the past decade, groups have quietly protected more than 100,000 acres, including the lower Kennebec/Back River region and a two-mile corridor along Grand Lake Stream. Gov.
