"Focus on Greater Bangor Region" piece on how an unlikely consortium of Pennsylvania Power and Light, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust, and the Penobscot Indian Nation are working to protect one of the last natural Atlantic salmon runs in the country--on the Penobscot River. After Maine's deregulation of the power industry, PPL acquired eight dams on the Penobscot. The company revived talks, stalled years earlier, to protect the run. Over five years, an agreement was reached to allow the trust to open 1,000 miles of river to migratory fish, provided it raised $25 million to remove three dams. Members of the Penobscot Nation hope to once again be able to exercise their sustenance fishing rights. With details on PPL's gains under the agreement.
