| Summary: | Fogo Island, Newfoundland has struggled to remain a viable community in recent years, in spite of the loss of the cod fishing industry in 1992, a lack of jobs, an outmigration of young people seeking jobs and an aging population. The resilience of the residents to these forces and the initiative native Zita Cobb has provided in founding the Shorefast Foundation has helped the island become a more sustainable and vibrant community. The non-profit foundation sponsors Fogo Island arts, which provides residencies to artists; preservation efforts in restoring old houses and the tradition of building punts; business assistance in the form of micro-lending; and the Fogo Island Inn, which has allowed the island to become a year around tourist destination.
