In the North Atlantic Ocean both temperate and cold lie about thirty small islands or archipelagos the areas of which range from 10 to 10000 km2. Nine of them are entitled to be called «fishing islands» the meaning of this expression lying on various indices these islands are: Disko the Vesteralen the Lofoten the South West Norway Islands the Faroese the Vestmannaeyjar thé Shetland the Magdalen Islands and Saint-Pierre and Miquelon. With the exception of Disko all are located in a cold temperate even subarctic environment as further south other activities such as agriculture and tourism successfully compete with fishing while northwards the islands are no longer inhabited. Nevertheless even if the insularity and latitude seem to predispose to fishing they do not necessary induce it as Anticosti Prince-Edward Island and Hailuoto bear witness. The « fishing islands» also arise from azonal factors : the abundance and accessibility of marine resources the deliberate or inevitable selection of the fishing industry as the economy of unenclaved islands must be specialized now. These economical options are a reflection of the insularity and latitude of the islands.
