Description
Summary:View showing pole in its setting Original commemorative pole located in Tongass (nr. Ketchikan). The Proud Raven at base commemorates the Raven clan that negotiated a peace with a rival clan. Differing stories explain the Lincoln figure. In one an early chief claimed to have been the first Indian to see a white man and raised the pole to honor this event. The only photograph of a white man the carver could obtain was of Lincoln. Another explanation is the top figure represents "lincoln" U.S.Revenue Cutter whose presence helped facilitate the negotiated peace treaty.
