Upon arrival on deck, the upper 5 cm of three MUC cores were sliced into 1cm intervals, using a cut-off syringe, and then stored at -20°C. The samples were dried at 60°C, subsequently treated with hydrochloric acid in order to remove the inorganic carbon until the sediment was not bubbling anymore, and then dried again at 60°C. Finally, percent TOC and TN were determined using an ELTRA CS2000 Carbon Analyzer.
