SMP measurements were done in close proximity (approximately 1-2 m distance) of snow pit locations (see Paul et al., 2017), to enable calibration of the instrument. Two perpendicular transects were made in a field that was surveyed using terrestrial laser scanning, to sample the spatial variability of the snow microstructure on sea ice.
