GPS data of selected drifting buoys deployed in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean during the TRANSDRIFT/TICE/NABOS expedition in summer 2018
Arctic sea ice kinematics and deformation play significant roles in heat and momentum exchange between atmosphere and ocean. However, mechanisms regulating their changes at seasonal scales remain poorly understood. Using position data of a total 32 buoys in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean (PA...

Using position data of a total 32 buoys in the Pacific sector of the Arctic Ocean (PAO), we characterized spatiotemporal variations in sea ice kinematics and deformation for autumn–winter 2018/19. Data collected by most of the 32 buoys used in the study are available from the CHINARE and IABP repositories. The present dataset comprises GPS data from a subset of these 32 buoys, namely from thermistor chain (SIMBA-type) buoys 2018T35, 2018T46, 2018T52, 2018T54, 2018T55. These buoys were, among others, installed on sea ice floes during the TRANSDRIFT/TICE/NABOS expedition onboard the Akademik Tryoshnikov in Aug/Sep 2018. The buoys subsequently drifted through the Transpolar Drift of the Arctic Ocean for several months, documenting the drift of the pack ice, until they ceased transmitting. The SIMBAs measured GPS time, latitude and longitude and transmitted those data via the iridium satellite network at 2-hourly intervals.
