Snow and ice thickness from airborne electromagnetic (EM) induction sounding over polynya event and surrounding multi-year ice off the North Coast of Greenland in March 2018, 2018-03-30

Summary: | Results of airborne-borne electromagnetic (AEM) measurements of total (ice + snow) sea-ice thickness performed in March 2018 in the Wandel Sea and adjacent Arctic Ocean up to 84.5 °N are presented. The data set was acquired from fixed-wing aircraft POLAR 5 surveys from the port of station Nord (Greenland) as part of the IceBird spring campaign 2018. The surveys were conducted on March 30 and 31 over newly formed ice of a closing polynya and the surrounding multi-year ice (MYI). Total thickness was recorded with a point spacing of approximately 6m. In addition, the surrounding MYI between 82.4°N and 84.5 °N and 14.2 °W and 8.9 °E was surveyed. The AEM survey showed mean and modal thicknesses of the newly formed ice of 1.96 +-1.5 and 0.95 m, respectively. The MYI surrounding the polynya had a mean and modal total thickness (snow + ice) of 2.1 +- 1.4 m and 2.0 m, respectively. Version 1.0, for details of processing see: Hendricks, S. and Rohde, J.
