Some geologists consider it the oldest ocean basin still in existence (Paleozoic), but others doubt the existence of "true" oceanic crust under the central Gulf. The nature and origin of the transitional crust and the overlying Mesozoic sedimentary sequences in the southeastern Gulf, therefore, was the main objective of Leg 77.
