Diese Fossilien hatten durch ihre Lebensweise die Möglichkeit einer großen horizontalen Verbreitung und sind deswegen für die Stratigraphie besonders wichtig. Sehr weit ist die Feingliederung des Oligo-Miocän zum Beispiel fortgeschritten in Trinidad, wo neuerdings BOLLI (1957) ein sehr detailliertes Schema aufgestellt hat. Man muß aber für eine allgemeine Verwendung einer solchen Einteilung noch sehr vorsichtig sein.
