Processing results from drill hole VNIIO-1987-Ich-Tarsk on the Kolguev Island (Leningrad)

Area of work: The Kolguev Island (Barents Sea) in the area of the positive Peschanoozerskaya Structure detected during seismic survey. Reasons for drilling: 1. Comprehensive study of the geological-geophysical section of the shelf in the area of the Kolguev Island. Study of stratal waters. 2. Identi...

Reasons for drilling: 1. Comprehensive study of the geological-geophysical section of the shelf in the area of the Kolguev Island. Study of stratal waters. 2. Identification of the main regularities and features of the geological structure in the drill section. 3. According to the program of drilling on islands and coasts of Arctic seas for creating a network of geological reference points for reliable referencing of geophysical data. Technical results: The hole was drilled in 1986-1987. It has penetrated the section up to 3005 m and stopped in Early Permian siliceous limestones. Scientific results: 1. A lithologic and stratigraphic sequence of sedimentary rocks (based on brachiopods, foraminifera, and palynology) from Early Permian to Neogene-Quaternary deposits has been carried out in the studied geological section. Composition of rocks (mineralogy, clay mineralogy, chemical composition) has been studied, rock complexes have been specificated and their geophysical characteristics have been given. 2. Thicknesses of the stratigraphic units are as followed: Permian 1069 m, Triassic - 1081 m, Jurassic - 247 m, Cretaceous - 466 m, Neogene-Quaternary - 142 m. 3. According to rock types the section can be divided to two structure stages, each stage has two series. The lower stage (3005-2440 m) is mainly composed of carbonaceous rocks. In the interval from 3005 to 2800 m there occurs a chiefly limestone series accumulated in the Early Permian. In the interval from 2800 to 2440 m it is overlain by a limestone series with interlayers of marls, sandstones, and argillites; this series accumulated from the Early to Late Permian. The upper stage (2440-0 m) is mainly composed of terrigenous rocks. In the interval from 2440 to 855 m there occurs a chiefly terrigenous series accumulated from the Late Permian to Triassic. The upper series in the interval from 855 to 0 m is chiefly composed of ...
