It further attempts to quantify the amount of the total energy bill to end users in these areas and to compare New England's energy costs to those of the U.S. Data are compared for coal, natural gas, residuals, gasoline, distillates, and electricity. Briefly, for the years 1970 to 1972, the New England energy bill averaged 28% higher than the U.S. bill. New England paid $2.01 per million Btus of energy whereas the U.S. averaged $1.57 per million Btus in 1972.
