Radar observation of an Arctic polynya under summer conditions

A study is made of data from the ERS-1 SAR acquired from the North East Water polynya and the Greenland Sea in the period July--August 1993 with the objective of studying sea ice under summer conditions, i.e. the microwave signatures and the dynamics of the ice. NOAA AVHRR images are used as a complementary data set. The present paper describes some meteorological features which have been encountered in the analysis including the influence on the ice of convective rolls in the planetary boundary layer, atmospheric gravity waves and other phenomena which have only been explained partly. The meteorological content of the data deserves further analysis.
