Summary:The purpose of this paper is to define reusable elements, or patterns, for risk analysis of maritime oil transportation using the CORAS methodology for model-based security risk analysis. The CORAS risk management process, in brief, identifies the context of the problem, points out the risks, analyzes risks' frequencies and consequences, evaluates risks' levels and suggests eventual risks' treatment. The paper starts with risk analysis of the maritime oil transportation along the Norwegian northern coast (provinces of Troms and Finnmark). Based on this case reusable elements on risks analysis of maritime oil transportation are extracted. Then, these elements are applied on another domain—south-eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain—to test if they can be applicable to analyze maritime oil transportation risks in this geographical area. The paper concludes with discussions on to which extent the extracted elements are indeed patterns that can be used for carrying risk analysis of other cases related to maritime oil transportation.
