A statistical comparison of northern light intensity gradients and GPS phase scintillations

In my master thesis I have looked at the correlations between the northern light intensity gradient and scintillations that is a consequence of the ionospheric density changing. The hypothesis is that scintillation values are grater at the edges of auroral forms. I have used All Sky Image of the northern light, from the Ny Ålesund station, and found the location of the satellite in the image and the phase scintillation value in the given location. Then using Open Computer Vision to find the gradient magnitude for this specific location in the auroral image. In my data set there are roughly 700 data points for scintillation values and corresponding gradient magnitude values, from several days in 2019, containing both dayand nighttime aurora. The results show that an increasing value of the gradient magnitude leads to an increasing value of the phase scintillation value. If we look at one day at the time, the hypothesis might not hold. On the other hand, if we look at numerous days or events we find that the scintillation values does increase at the edge of the auroral edges.
