カナダ辺境地域の都市(第2報) -マニトバ州北部についての補遺とユーコン・北西両準州についての予察-

本紀要第30巻第3号所収の第1報(以下前稿という)で取り上げたカナダ・マニトバ州北部の三つの小都市,すなわちザパー・チャーチル・トンプソンについて,前稿執筆以後に知りえた若干の事実を報告するとともに,ユーコン・北西両準州の二,三の都市について,地理学的概観を行う。これら両準州では,準州政府所在地(ホワイトホースとイエローナイフ,以下では州都の語も用いる)という,マニトバ州北部にはみられなかった行政機能主導的性格の都市が存在するので,主にそれらに焦点をあて,あわせて,19世紀末から今世紀初頭にかけ,金の採掘で一時的繁栄をみたドーソンについてもふれる。 Following his previous paper appeared in the last volume of these Memoirs, the auther describes the geography of several frontier towns in Canada. At first he gives a supplementary account of The Pas and Churchill in Northern Manitoba treated in the previous paper. Next his attention is focused on three frontier towns in Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories; Whitehorse, Dawson City and Yellowknife. Of these three towns, Whitehorse and Yellowknife have quite a common function, namely the function of administrative center of these Territories. Besides this administrative function, Whitehorse works as a transportation and trading center in the Territory, while Yellowknife has a famous gold mine. The rapid growth of these two towns should be attributed to this multiple character of functions. On the other hand, Dawson City, prospered in the gold rush days at the turn of the century, has only one thousand inhabitants and makes a bare living by the tourist industry.
