北方圏諸都市の比較研究へ向けての第一歩として,カナダ・マニトバ州北部に位置するザパー・チャーチル・トンプソンの三つの小都市の概略を記述する。ザパーは農林狩猟業地帯の縁辺部にあり,これらの産業や関連するサービスの中心地としての機能を有する。チャーチルはハドソン湾岸にあり,1920年代末にここまで建設されたハドソン湾鉄道と港湾施設によって,カナダ平原地方の穀物をヨーロッパなどに輸出するための港町として発展した。しかし,不利な航海条件その他から、近年は伸び悩んでいる。トンプソンは1950年代後半のニッケル鉱の開発に伴って,急速に新しい都市が建設されたもので,典型的な鉱業都市といえる。 As a first step for the comparative study of urban settlements in northern regions, the author describes the geography of three towns in northern Manitoba, Canada: The Pas, Churchill, and Thompson. Although its population is relatively small, The Pas, situated in the fringe area between the agricultural and productive forest zones, is the major center for the surrounding rural settlements. Churchill, on the coast of Hudson Bay, developed as a grain exporting port with the construction of Hudson Bay Railway and harbor facilities during the late 1920's. The severe sailing conditions along the Hudson Bay route due to the short navigation season, danger of floating ice, etc., however, restrict importation of goods and have hindered Churchill from developing rapidly. Thompson is a typical mining town planned and developed in the late 1950's by the International Nickel Company (INCO) and has become the most populous city in northern Manitoba.
