Summary: | In attempting to provide modern water and sewerage services to the non-indigenous inhabitants of Canadian Arctic communities, engineering modifications are necessary owing to the presence of a continuous permafrost zone and a severe climate. Modifications are constraints on communities in that the costs of providing water and sewerage services are augmented to such an extent that most communities are financially unable to provide modern services at a reasonable cost. The inability of communities to provide modern water and sewerage services may inhibit the growth of present communities and influence the location and development of future communities in the Canadian Arctic. |
