Cet essai identifie les directions majeures de la recherche internationale sur l’art nordique depuis l’exposition de Kirk Varnedoe, Northern Light, en 1982. Dans les décennies qui ont suivi cette exposition, une perspective plus inclusive de l’art et de la culture visuelle nordiques a réorienté le champ, insistant davantage sur les échanges mondiaux que sur l’exceptionnalisme régional ou national. Dans le même temps, les chercheurs ont sondé les implications postcoloniales de l’histoire de l’art nordique et reconsidéré les représentations de l’« altérité » dans l’imagination nordique. Le présent essai soutient que ces champs d’étude ainsi que d’autres champs émergents, incluant l’écocritique, la théorie queer et le material turn, vont impulser de nouvelles expressions fertiles pour la recherche à mesure que les chercheurs continueront d’interroger et d’élargir le canon moderniste. This essay identifies major international research trends in the study of Nordic art since Kirk Varnedoe’s 1982 exhibition, Northern Light. In the decades since this exhibition, a more inclusive framework of Nordic art and visual culture has reoriented the field, placing a greater emphasis on global exchange versus national or regional exceptionalism. At the same time, scholars have probed the postcolonial implications of Nordic art history and reconsidered representations of “otherness” in the Nordic imagination. This essay argues that these and other emerging areas of study, including eco-criticism, queer theory, and the “material turn,” will inculcate a generative new phrase of research as scholars continue to interrogate and broaden the modernist canon.
