Rendering comfort and control in Tundra Nenets sambadabc

This article approaches Nenets sambadabc, shamanic ritual songs, bringing together current understandings about Tundra Nenets language, folklore and singing with discussions about reindeer herding. The research material consists of ten texts gathered by Toivo Lehtisalo in the beginning of 20th century. The analysis concentrates on the Nenets language ideologies and the ways singing is objectified and commodified; on Nenets honorific registers and the ways in which spirits are interacted with; and on the interrelationship of the ways spirits and reindeer are interacted within the frames of sentient ecology. As a result, the article draws a spectrum of differing materialities that are inherent in understanding the performance and revoicing of the sambadabc and in informing the interaction between human and variable non-human others. Cet article traite des sambadabc, les chants rituels nénetses, et il associe les conceptions modernes de la langue, de l’oralité et du chant nénetses et les débats portant sur l’élevage du renne. Cette recherche repose sur dix textes collectés par Toivo Lehtisalo au début du xxe siècle. L’analyse se concentre sur les idéologies linguistiques nénetses et la manière dont le chant est objectifié et réifié sur les registres honorifiques de la langue et la manière dont se produit l’interaction avec les esprits sur les corrélations entre les esprits et les rennes dans le cadre de l’écologie des sensations. En conclusion, cet article esquisse un éventail des diverses matérialités inhérentes à la reproduction et au chant des sambadabc et qui informent l’interaction entre les humains et divers « autres » non humains.
