Quand la tugtupite groenlandaise devient une pierre précieuse

Quand, en 2019, le gouvernement groenlandais promeut l’exploitation artisanale des gemmes, une polémique s’ouvre autour du statut de la tugtupite : cette pierre locale exploitée de longue date est-elle précieuse ou non ? Pour les trois instances en présence, les critères d’évaluation varient : en gemmologie il existe des normes industrielles, pour l’État une éthique, et pour le marché artisanal une pratique. Abordant la gemme et les autres formes de tugtupite comme des « matérialités » de la ressource (Richardson et Weszkalnys, 2014), cet article examine les caractéristiques industrielles et politiques de la gemme et analyse les effets sociaux de la promotion de cette pierre au Groenland. Il montre notamment comment l’usage de cette catégorie de la ressource est devenu un instrument de représentation de l’État. When, in 2019, the Greenlandic government promoted the artisanal mining of gems, a controversy erupted about the status of tugtupite: was this local stone, which had long been mined, precious or not? For the three bodies involved, the evaluation criteria varied: in gemmology there are industrial standards, for the state an ethics, and for the artisanal market a practice. Approaching gems and other forms of tugtupite as resource “materialities” (Richardson and Weszkalnys, 2014), this article examines the industrial and political characteristics of gems, and analyses the social effects of the promotion of this stone in Greenland. In particular, it shows how the use of this resource category became an instrument of state representation.
