Vík í Mýrdal, petit village du sud de l’Islande, abrite une population éminemment cosmopolite qui vit de l’activité touristique du pays. Surplombant le village, le volcan sous-glaciaire Katla inquiète depuis de nombreuses années les institutions de surveillance islandaises qui tentent de se tenir prêtes pour sa prochaine éruption, dont le potentiel destructif est depuis longtemps annoncé. Localement, le volcan suscite de la crainte, de l’engouement, voire de l’indifférence. Habitués à des niveaux disparates à une proximité volcanique immédiate, les Islandais et les étrangers qui habitent le village doivent apprendre à se familiariser avec cet existant — dont la discrétion est proportionnelle à la dangerosité — dès qu’une manifestation non éruptive perturbe l’espace social. Cet article propose d’envisager comment les habitants du village élaborent une relation sur le mode de l’intime grâce au développement in situ de compétences leur permettant de forger un mode d’attention et des relations géosociales spécifiques à ce volcan. Vík í Mýrdal, a small village in southern Iceland, is home to an eminently cosmopolitan population that lives on the region’s tourist activity. Looming over the village, the subglacial volcano Katla has worried Iceland’s surveillance institutions for years, as they attempt to ready themselves for the next eruption, whose potential for destruction was forecast long ago. Locally, the volcano arouses worry, passion, even indifference. Having different degrees of habituation to the immediate proximity of a volcano, the Icelanders and foreigners who live in the village must learn to familiarise themselves with this living entity—whose discretion is proportional to its dangerousness—as soon as a non-eruptive event disturbs the social space. This article considers how villagers develop a personal relationship thanks to the in situ development of skills enabling them to forge a mode of attention to, and specific geosocial relations with, this volcano.
