Maria Yetneut was born in 1927 or 28, one of 13 children in a big family. "We were all rich." They had all died(?). They did something to her father. Her mother died in 1941, when Maria was 13. We lived on the east shore of Chukotka, then came down to Penzhinsky territory, down to Kamenskoye. They were at Kayaklee in 1934, someone died (?). There was an artel there, and in 1936 her father set up a herd. In 1938 he shot himself (?). She was 12 years old in 1939. Works in Institute for Advanced Teacher Training, Palana. She was born in a yaranga on the tundra. Learned Russian as 4th language starting in grad school and extensive residence in Kamchatka (1995 5mos, 1997-98 17 months). Had very good conversational skills by summer 1997 and fluent by early 1998, at least in listening. Has thick American accent. Knows a few words of Koryak for social situation.
