This is a little story about a family outing to pick berries when they encountered a big bear. It was recorded in the little house where BP was staying, with Aleksandra Truba coming by prior arrangement to tell a few little anecdotes she'd prepared. Nobody was present except for BP and a cat who can be heard jumping to the floor from the stove and at some point it miaowed. Recorded with a Marantz PMD660 solid state recorder and an AKG 1000 S microphone, in mono, and a Panasonic HC-V707EG-K video camera on a little tripod on a stool set up in the middle of the room and zoomed in on AET. The introductory sentences by BP and the end (when BP prevented AET from launching straight into another little story) were trimmed off the video file with Avidemux; the ELAN alignmet was done with the audio extracted from this trimmed file. In addition, the original Marantz audio file is archived, since that is higher quality (bear_AET_010317.WAV). This project focuses on the documentation of Negidal, a highly moribund Northern Tungusic language spoken by at most a handful of individuals on the Amgun’ and Lower Amur rivers in the Russian Federation. The language comprises two dialects, Upper and Lower Negidal, of which the latter might already be extinct. The project will result primarily in an extensive corpus of interlinearized texts from the Upper dialect together with accompanying audio recordings. Aleksandra Truba worked as a nurse and doctor's assistant. She spent two years in Ukraine with her Ukrainian husband when her children were small.
