Description
Summary:Genre: Medicine/huru: Uncle Paulus Pidhu recorded in his home (and SD's, Cawa Lunda's, home too when visiting Palu'e) in the evening 18 June -15 in kampong Nara. The recording was done directly with the H4N because I knew had to ask questions and that the several persons present would want to add something to the other's narratives. Finally I got to record the local practitioners; Paulus Pidhu, Veronika Punga, Meli Pisane, Sami Vendelinus (present after a while). Lebi (sister) and Wongga (husband) were listening. Pidhu told two 'huru' this evening, neither uses sirih pinang (he told two other non-sirih pinang 'huru' three days later). Pidhu's 'huru' are prohibitions, that inflict disease, and are hung in the betel (sirih pinang) trees. Huru de'u (huru rat) is like that told by Bhethu in SD1-284. The sign for the curse is made by five plaited lontar houses (if these may be attached to another branch, lontar or coconut? This curse uses simple speech, 'caba', "curse-language", to activate it. The transgressor will find his clothing attacked by rats, until he comes to Pidhu or the family with a sample of estroyed cloth, which they will take to the sign with 'siwe', speak and throw the rice five times (also done if you want to take down, 'lo'e', the curse). Then the terror will stop. Region: Palu'e, Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. Recording made in kampong Nara, Keli domain. SD1-290.eaf SD1-290.wav
