Professors Yao Tandong, Lonnie Thompson and Volker Mosbrugger of Germany organized the first Third Pole Environment Workshop to bring together organizations studying glaciers and climate change in the Himalayan Mountains. OSU PARTNERS: Byrd Polar Research Center; School of Earth Sciences COMMUNITY PARTNERS: Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research (China) PRIMARY CONTACT: Lonnie Thompson (thompson.3@osu.edu) Professor Lonnie Thompson's research team has worked collaboratively with Chinese scientists, most notably Professor Yao Tandong, for nearly three decades following a trip to encourage scientific exchange between scientists in China and the U.S. The Ohio State team has conducted major ice core drilling programs at multiple sites in China since 1986. Ohio State and Chinese teams have drilled ice cores containing evidence of Earth's past climate dating back hundreds of thousands of years.
