| Summary: | The "Escanaba" was built by the Defoe Boat & Motor Works of Bay City, Michigan in 1932. She was based at the U.S. Coast Guard Station at Grand Haven, Michigan until 1941. The ship was refitted and armed for combat use and taken to the Atlantic Ocean. Sailing in the North Atlantic, the "Escanaba" sank German submarines and rescued survivors of the SS "Cherokee". She was also assigned weather patrol and escort duty through mid-1943. June 10, 1943 the "Escanaba" was blown apart. Other ships converged to rescue survivors, but only 2 of the 103 men aboard were saved. The cause of the explosion was never determined. |
