Such comparison provides dramatic evidence for the steady state character of large scale Atlantic dynamics." By the comparison of the South Atlantic cross sections of temperature and salinity of "Crawford"-"Atlantis" 1957/58 with the corresponding profiles of "Meteor" 1925/27 F. C. FUGLISTER (1960) concludes: "Such comparison provides dramatic evidence for the steady state character of the large scale Atlantic dynamics." In the present study it is demonstrated, that only in the core layers (Subantarctic Intermediate Water, North Atlantic Deep Water, Antarctic Bottom Water) stationary conditions exist in S ‰ (in the bottom water also in tp), From the dynamical point of view we cannot expect a steady state character. This result is confirmed by a comparison of the dynamic computations of the geostrophic currents perpendicular to the "Crawford" and "Meteor"-profiles in 16° S. |
