Summary:The occurrence of a very large cranchiid squid captured alive in the Ligurian Sea (western Mediterranean Sea) is documented by a colour photograph. The squid had an estimated tortal length of 170 cm and belongs to the subfamily Taoniinae (Teuthoidea: Cranchiidae), either to the genus Megalocranchia or Galiteuthis. This is the largest cranchiid ever reported from the North Atlantic-Mediterranean area.
