Summary: | During the breeding season of the Adelie penguin Pygoscelis adeliae it's energy requirements running over scree has been examinated. All experimental work has been done at Esperanza station, Hope Bay, Antarctic peninsula (56° 59' W, 63° 24' S) during the Antarctic summer 1989/90. Energy expenditure of walking penguins has been calculated by simplifying their way between the colony sites and the open sea to a sequence of standardized fields. The formula published by PINSHOW et al (1977) has been modified. It is now available for computing the energy expenditure of penguins walking up and down hills with different speeds. All formulas are applicable to all other vertebrates moving on land. Just some constants have to be changed. Even for moving under waterat least the underlying idea is meaningful. |
