Summary:A new species of a rarely encountered genus Cycloteuthis is described on the basis of a specimen taken in the central part of the Indian Ocean by the research vessel "VITYAZ." The new species, C. akimushkini, possesses a number of quite peculiar features. Only a single species of this genus, C. sirventi Joubin 1919, was previously known; it was described from only 1 specimen captured in the North Atlantic. This description of a 2nd species expands the diagnosis of the genus.
