| Summary: | Este crucero ha demostrado que barcos de investigación oceanográfica como el de INOCAR son una excelente plataforma para estudiar delfines y ballenas. Gran parte del conocimiento que se tiene sobre estos animales en el Pacífico Sudeste proviene de trabajos similares. During the cruise CO_II-01, between Guayaquil and the Galapagos Islands from 17 september to 9 october 2001, the ship B/I Orión made 26 sightings of cetaceans. There were identified six species of dolphins and toothed whales (Odontoceti). The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), the spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), the striped dolphin (S. coeruleoalba), the killer whale (Orcinus orca), the shortfinned pilot whale or blackfish (Globicephala macrorhynchus), and one of the the two species of baleen whales observed (Mysticeti), the humpback whale (Megaptera novaengliae). Pilot whales were the most abundant species, with 14.44 whales per 100 miles. The absence of sperm whales (Physeter catodon) was the most significant result of the cruise. It is recommended that observations on cetaceans be continued during oceanographic cruises, so as to improve our knowledge of these animals in the Southeast Pacific. Incluye ref.bibl., ilus., tbls.
