Patagonian toothfish fishing at the shelf of the Kerguelen Islands

During the fishing season of 1992, about 6000 tonnes of toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) were taken by Ukrainian (trawl and longline) fishery in the region of the Kerguelen Isles (Southern Indian Ocean, France). Commission for the Conservation of the Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) WG FSA (1993) expressed its concern that such level of yield might affect the state of the population and has an adverse effect on the fishery. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) of the Ukrainian trawl fisheries in the 1993 split year was 2.6-3.8 t per hour of trawling, while CPUE in the 1992 split year (the first season of Ukrainian commercial fishery of the toothfish at the northern shelf of the Keguelen) was considerably lower, at 1-2 t per hour of trawling. An analysis of size composition of fish in trawl catches in 1992-1993 showed that there had been no evident alterations in the demographic structure of the Patagonian toothfish population in the Kerguelen Isles region as a result of the fishery. This indicates that the observed yield at least does not surpass Total Allowable Catch. Реальная промысловая обстановка па траловом промысле клыкача в сезон 1993 г. на северном шельфе о-вов Кергелен была благоприятной, что позволило полностью выбрать квоту по траловому промыслу клыкача для украинского флота (1,8 тыс. т). Промысловые нагрузки составили в среднем 3,8 т за часовое траление и 22,6 т за сутки лова, достигая в отдельные сутки до 50 т. Потребность в сырье в большей мере определялась технологическими возможностями рыбцеха по переработке улова, чем сырьевой базой, поэтому такой показатель, как вылов на сутки промысла, в данной ситуации не использовали. Если сравнивать уловы на промысловое усилие в сезон 1993 г. с аналогичными в 1991-92 гг., первым годом промысловой эксплуатации украинским флотом скопления клыкача на северном шельфе о-вов Кергелен, то можно отметить, что в сезон 1991-92 гг. они были значительно ниже, на уровне 1-2 т за часовое траление, в то время как в сезон 1993 г. возросли до 2,6-3,8 т / ч а с ...
