Rapprochement and confluence of climatic fronts eastward of the Kerguelen Archipelago. Ecological effects

In the region adjacent to the Kerguelen Isles (Southern Indian Ocean, France) three global scale climatic fronts can be recognised: the Sub Tropical Front (STF), the Sub Antarctic Front (SAF), and the Southern Polar Front (SPF). Based on the YugNIRO databank of deepwater oceanographic observations f...

Based on the YugNIRO databank of deepwater oceanographic observations for the ,area 40-56 degree S, 60-85 degree E, certain features of the STF, SAF and SPF during different seasons are considered. According to the opinion of Gamberoni et al. (1982), Belkin (1989), northern boundary of the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ) in the Crozet-Kerguelen region results from the confluence of the SAF and STF into a single front. Our data show, however, that there is no complete confluence of the SAF and STF in the region between 60-85 degree E; rather, there is an approach of the STF to SAF observable in two sections, between 60-65 degree E and 70-75 degree E, where the STF forms anticyclonic meanders. East of 75 degree E, the STF mover away from the SAF and thus the normal three-front structure of the ocean is fully restored. In the area of rapprochement of the three fronts there is created a unique situation of transition of the subtropical zone immediately to the Antarctic zone with the elimination of not the Subantarctic zone only, as is the case in the areas of the SAF-STF confluence, but actually of the PFZ.
