Productive ecosystems of the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean: distinctive features of their formation and functioning

The main results of the Soviet fisheries research studies, conducted in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean from the beginning of the 1970s to the end of the 1980s, have been analyzed. It was identified that several commercially valuable fish species (grey and marbled rockcods, Patagonian toothf...

It was identified that several commercially valuable fish species (grey and marbled rockcods, Patagonian toothfish, mackerel icefish, spiny icefish) and Antarctic krill are significant for the purposes of commercial exploitation. Distinctive features of fishing productivity formation, of distribution and behaviour of fishing targets made it possible to single out five productive ecosystems: ecosystems of isolated underwater mounts (banks); the ecosystem of the Kerguelen Islands; the ecosystem of the Cooperation Sea; the ecosystem of the Cosmonaut Sea; and the ecosystem of the High-Latitude Off-Shelf Frontal Zone. It was established that the peculiarities of the structure of Antarctic waters and special features of its transformation under the influence of topogenic effect and specifics of atmospheric circulation were the most important factors affecting its productivity and, quite often, determining its formation.
