Wicker was mustered in as a 2nd Lieutenant to Company C of the 28th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on May 22, 1861. He was detailed to the Signal Corps Service on August 25, 1861 and promoted to 1st Lieutenant on March 19, 1862. He was appointed as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Signal Corps on June 13, 1863 and served in the Army of the Potomac and Department of the Gulf until honorably discharged on August 22, 1865. After the war, he served two years as agent for the Russian and American Telegraph expedition in Siberia. In 1869, he was appointed special agent of the Treasury Department in Alaska and, in 1873, he was appointed by President U.S. Grant as Collector of Customs at Key West, Florida where he was suspected of being involved in Cuba's revolution for independence from Spain. He also worked in the Customs Service from 1889 to 1894 and, subsequently, was associated with the Mutual Life Insurance Company, New Orleans, Louisiana and served as the U.S. Appraiser of the Port of New Orleans.
