The definition of frozen comes from a March 2, 2009 article from the Traverse City Record Eagle, where "ice must form from the southern shoreline of the bay in Traverse City about six miles out to Power Island to officially be considered frozen." List of years Grand Traverse Bay has frozen with corresponding number of days frozen within a given year. Data from 1855 and 1859 are missing. This list was compiled by local meteorologist Greg MacMaster and varies slightly from the list compiled from the office of Louis Sleder.
