Kitovi usani su pelagične životinje koje se hrane planktonom i ribom. Umjesto zubi imaju usi ili rožnate ploče pričvršćene za rubove gornje čeljusti. Kitovi zubani su karnivorne životinje koje u čeljustima sadrže velik broj jednostavnih stožastih zuba za hvatanje i pridržavanje plijena. Od svih morskih sisavaca kitovi su najbolje prilagođeni životu u moru. Kitovi podreda Mysticeti raspoređeni su u četiri porodice, dvije potporodice, šest rodova i četrnaest vrsta. Neke od vrsta kitova usana su: grenlandski glatki kit (Balaena mysticetus), pacifički glatki kit (Eubalaena japonica), kit minka (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), plavi kit (Balaenoptera musculus), grbavi kit (Megaptera novaeangliae), sivi kit (Eschrichtius robustus) i patuljasti glatki kit (Caperea marginata). Whales, order Cetacea, are divided on suborder Mysticeti, baleen whales and Odontoceti, toothed whales depending on structure of their jaws. Baleen whales are pelagic animals and they feed on plankton and fish. Instead of teeth they have baleen or keratin plates attached to edges of their maxilla. Toothed whales are carnivous animals. They have large number of simple, conical teeth in their jaws for capturing and holding their prey. Whales are most adapted to marine life of all marine mammals. Whales of the Mysticeti suborder are divided into four families, two subfamilies, six genera and fourteen species. The most famous species of baleen whales are: Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), North Pacific right whale (Eubalaena japonica), Minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) and pygmy right whale (Caperea marginata).
